Integrating with CMIS using Calopus Direct SQL Integration

Another popular academic package in use at Leeds Metropolitan University is the CMIS system, used for timetabling academic activities.

There are many challenges with integrating any set of corporate systems with a package as "data hungry" as CMIS. The information required for effective timetabling and scheduling of rooms is often sourced from many operational system. The timescales involved are also often different to other academic systems, as timetabling is required earlier in the acedemic cycle than the enrolment process, for example.

Calopus HE was therefore configured at Leeds Metropolitan University to not only synchronise operatational data with CMIS as it is changed, but also to derive and pre create information on future academic periods so that the timetabling effort could be performed as early as possible. Information on likely admissions, exam board results and clearing decisions needed to be taken into account and then quickly corrected as the real picture emerges during enrolment.

Once timetables and room allocations have been finilised in CMIS, this information is then read back into Calopus HE for electronic use across the University, for example, in the student helpdesk system to enable helpdesk staff to answer timetabling queries from students, which is a common request.

At Leeds Metropolitan University, this timetable information is also fed to a number of departmental attendance tracking and reporting applications.

Using Calopus HE to fully integrate CMIS into a University enhances the ability to offer earlier timetables and increase customer service on timetable queries, boosting the satisfaction levels (and therefore the reputation) of the institution.
