Creating an Academic Data Store at The University of Warwick

One of the Calopus HE projects at The University of Warwick involved the creation of an academic data warehouse in Calopus called ADS (Academic Data Store).

Warwick was keen to reduce the reporting burden on their operational systems by creating a data warehouse of academic, ID and financial information. ADS combines information from many of their adminsitrative systems, including SITS, ID Management and SAP into a bespoke designed data warehouse which now is comprised of over 60 data tables.

The core of this work was completed within just 3 working days, with the design, creation and population of over 30 data tables. You may be suprised to hear that it was Warwick's CIS team that performed most of this work after a single day of training from the Calopus installation team.

The Calopus HE integration layer ensures that the information is kept up to date in timescales defined by their business requirements.

The structure of ADS was completely under the control of their CIS team, allowing the ADS project the freedom to facilitate access to data normally found across many disparate systems into one unified structure that was fully optimised for the task of reporting and process collaboration.

Using this approach, a significant number of flat file extractions, FTP transfers and flat file upload processes were eliminated from their integration operations, reducing their support overheads and increasing data acuracy and timeliness.
