Integrating with WebCT using Calopus XML Web Services

Calopus HE has been successfully integrating SCT Banner with WebCT for over 5 years at Leeds Metropolitan University.

As Calopus HE is a middleware product, it was able to extract and combine the information required by WebCT from many disparate databases. Changes were automaticaly tracked across operational data on instructors, modules, module groupings, students, student module assignments and then immediately transmitted to WebCT using the IMS XML Enterprise API gateway, supplied as part of the WebCT product.

This approach reduced the timescales of transfering data from SCT Banner to WebCT from 2 days to less than 5 minutes and was also seamlessly integrated with the student enrolment process, allowing near instant access for new and returning students to their WebCT modules.

Calopus HE halted the flow of incomplete student data and allowed these records to be flagged to the Academic Registry department. This ensured that only complete data reached WebCT and also that the time taken in identification and correction of incomplete records was minimised. It also made sure that the responsibility of correcting data was passed back to the administrators that entered it and not the WebCT support staff, reducing WebCT support effort significantly.

The Calopus HE Team have in depth working knowledge of the data structures of many student systems, including SITS. As the extraction of source information and the subsequent transmission of data to WebCT are logically separated within Calopus HE, any student system can be integrated using our approach. We are also able to transfer modules, programs or sub-modules as WebCT modules and are not bound to a specific academic catalogue structure.
